I Tell My Patients to Lose Weight—So Why Can’t I?

How many times have you thought, I should have weight loss figured out—after all, I tell my patients to lose weight almost daily!

You’re not alone. I hear this from so many physician moms who shame themselves with this thought. And I want you to know—this belief is not only unfair to yourself, but it’s also completely false.

🔹 Our nutrition education was pretty non-existent. At best, we got a few hours in med school, and the takeaway? Weight loss = calories in minus calories out. As doctors, we know that’s a massive oversimplification. The human body is far more complex than a math equation. Shifts in hormones, cortisol levels, and the demands of our schedules all play a huge role.

🔹 Willpower isn’t the problem. You’ve powered through residency, overnight shifts, and the never-ending demands of medicine and motherhood. The issue isn’t discipline—it’s the cycle of stress, exhaustion, and emotional eating that no amount of willpower can fix.

🔹 Medical training didn’t teach us how to handle stress. We learned how to treat diabetes and hypertension but got zero training on how to handle the late-night chart munching, the post-call cravings, or the habit of turning to food to feel better in the moment. 

🔹 The most important organ for weight loss isn’t your stomach—it’s your brain. It’s not just about what or when we eat, but why we eat. Are we eating to cope with stress? To reward ourselves for making it through a brutal shift? Because we dread charting? Until we address that, no meal plan or calorie tracker will lead to lasting weight loss.

🔹 You need to learn from someone who gets your life. Not a 20-something nutritionist who isn’t a parent and has no idea what it’s like to be on call, running on fumes, and still needing to function as both a doctor and a mom.

And here’s the biggest thing: Stop guilting and shaming yourself for not having figured this out. You’ve been busy saving lives, raising kids, and running a household. Guilt and shame only keep you stuck. They lead to self-blame, frustration, and inaction—keeping you from seeking the resources that can actually help you.
