The 3 Unavoidable Phases of Transformation
Mar 28, 2025
Medical school was a journey that mirrored the process of any big life change. At the beginning, it felt like drinking from a fire hydrant—information was coming at me at an overwhelming pace, and I had to learn how to stay afloat.
Then came the messy middle, where I was juggling studying for boards, figuring out how to navigate the wards, and taking care of real patients for the first time. It was exhausting, but I kept pushing forward.
Finally, the glorious end arrived—Match Day—when all the hard work paid off, and I found out where I’d be going for residency... only to start the cycle all over again in residency.
Embarking on a health and wellness journey is process too, especially for women physicians who often juggle busy and demanding careers with personal responsibilities. It's natural to encounter challenges along the way, but understanding the phases of change can provide clarity and motivation.
The Three Phases of Change
Robin Sharma eloquently describes the process of change:
"All change is hard in the beginning, messy in the middle, glorious at the end."
- The Hard Beginning: Initiating change requires significant effort. Consider a rocket launch: it expends about 60% of its fuel just to overcome Earth's gravitational pull. Similarly, breaking free from long-standing habits of snacking, stress eating and being sedentary demands substantial energy and determination.
- The Messy Middle: As initial enthusiasm wanes, the journey can become challenging. This phase, often termed the "river of misery," involves persistence and resilience to keep showing up for workouts and being consistent with health nutrition. It's reminiscent of the rigorous years of medical training, where perseverance is key.
- The Glorious End: Achieving your wellness goals, improving your health and getting to goal weight brings a profound sense of accomplishment. It feels amazing to fit back into your favorite clothes and love the way you look in the mirror. Standing at the top of the mountain and reflecting back on the progress made and the obstacles overcome is such an amazing feeling.
